Why Isn’t Life Simple?

Perhaps all of us can look back at earlier times in our lives and remark that life was much simpler then. Just the act of growing into adulthood complicates life; yet there are probably times in your adult life that were simpler than they are now. Not all complications are necessarily involuntary; we often complicate our lives without realizing it.

Over at Frugal For Life blog, an article was posted about why life is complicated. Here are three of the ones I thought most fitting, and worth examining as I find the areas where I have moved away from simplicity.

Too Many Choices

Our world is full of choices. Add the Internet to the array of items found in any store, and you can have just about anything. But instead of spending time researching the perfect option, wouldn’t it be better to find a good one and go with it?

Technology

Technology, often touted as being the great simplifier, can actually make our lives more complicated. Some technology does simplify life: electric/gas stoves, refrigerators, automatic washing machines do save time and effort. But does the pasta device that promises to cook your pasta to perfection after you pour in boiling water? Does the personal chopper/blender that makes omelets in one whir truly simplify breakfast, or make it more complicated? Moving out of the household arena, does your cell phone simplify or complicate your life?

Overconsumption

We have gotten to the point where we consume much more than we should. I am not talking about food only. I am talking about everything that feeds into our throw-away society. We throw out our toaster and buy a new one after 3 years; 50 years ago the toaster would have lasted much longer and been repairable.

Summary

As I look over these items, I see some areas where I have moved away from simplicity. I will research every last little option rather than take action. I have been suckered into the latest fad gadgets that end up collecting dust after I use them a few times. I have upgraded technology just because I wanted the latest and greatest. And I have been known to buy things new just for the sake of replacing something I didn’t like the look of, even though it was still useful.

It’s worth thinking about.
