What Is Simplicity?

What is Simplicity?

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a young woman went to seek the advice of a hermit living in a remote mountain cave. After the struggles of such a journey, much as told in other tales of this sort, she reached the cave. Kneeling down, the young woman asked her one question. “Oh, wise one, I have struggled long and hard. I am overwhelmed. There is too much to do. What can I do?”

The wise woman looked at the traveler and said, “You need to simplify your life.”

The young woman left, and obeying the laws of such a journey, waited one year before making the journey again. She knelt in front of the hermit. “Oh wise one, you told me last year that I need to simplify my life. Will you please tell me what simplicity is?”

The wise woman looked at the traveler and said, “Simplicity is what makes your life less complicated.”

Our constant connectedness via technology, close proximity to other people, and the mythology that we can, in fact, have it all, contribute to a sense of overwhelming load. We multi-task, trying to get it all done, and watch in dismay as our to-do lists grow ever bigger.

Simplicity is taking steps to cut back on the things that are putting pressure on us. It is making changes in our priorities, our commitments, and possibly our ways of life.
