What is a LifeHack?

Photo by Andy WooThe term “lifehack” is being thrown about on the web, in magazines, and in the titles of books these days. Lifehacks are familiar for those who work in programming, but its extension into everyday life may leave some people baffled.

What Is A LifeHack?

Lifehacks started out as the automations programmers use to be more productive. An example of this would be a program to automate cleaning up your PC. Since that time, “lifehack” has been expanded to mean “anything that solves an everyday problem in a clever or non-obvious way” (courtesy Wikipedia).

Why Lifehack?

As working moms, it is important that we consider lifehacks in order to maintain our sanity. Just because my mom always scrubbed the floor on her hands and knees doesn’t mean it is necessarily the best way for me.

Example of a LifeHack

A lifehack I ran across recently was one that allows you to freeze ground meat in such a way to make it easy to break off portions: put the meat into a zipper bag and smooth it to a uniform thickness. Then using a ruler, make section marks on the bag to make lines where the portions are to be. After freezing it, you can quickly break off exactly what you need.

Another example is the pictured lifehack: cord management with a rock.

Where Do I Find LifeHacks?

There are many sites with Lifehacks out there. Here are some that I read regularly:
