Stress doesn’t always come from huge events in our lives. It can be caused in little amounts by small events, and build up to the point where it has the same impact as a major catastrophe. Over the next few Fridays, I’m going to examine some of the causes of daily stress and give some suggestions on what can be done to alleviate them.

Multitasking

What is multitasking?

Multitasking is a situation where you try to consciously do two things at once. You may watch television while reading, or listen to a book while doing housework, or perhaps talk on the phone while driving.

How Does Multitasking Cause Stress?

Multitasking fatigues our brain as we try to maintain a hold on multiple items. Part of our attention is always somewhere else. [Links to other articles]

How to Stop Multitasking

Stopping multitasking is not easy if it has become an ingrained habit. Mostly it takes awareness. If you are aware that you are doing it, you have a chance to interrupt the thought pattern and focus on one thing at a time.

To combat any bad habit, you must replace the habit with something else. To fight multitasking, you must replace it with a concentration on what you are doing at the moment, and not allot anything to intrude on your concentration.

If you honestly think you can’t give up multitasking because you have too much to do, then you need to consider your activity and commitment level. More on that next week.
