The Secrets of Eliminating Daily Stress: Attitude

Photo by By shelley_ginger Stress doesn’t always come from huge events in our lives. It can be caused in little amounts by small events, and build up to the point where it has the same impact as a major catastrophe. Over the next few Fridays, I’m going to examine some of the causes of daily stress and give some suggestions on what can be done to alleviate them.

Attitude

Attitude, more than any other thing, can quickly change how we perceive our world. It is a filter with which we look at the rest of the world and events, and can quickly add stress to our lives if we are not careful. Here are some common attitudes that can get in our way:

  1. Wanting things to be different than what they are. If we are spending our time and energy wanting things to be other than as they are, we are going to lose sight of what is going on in the present. This alone, not to mention tackling an impossible task, can sink our attitudes. Better: accept what you cannot change (this includes the past and other people) and move on.
  2. Wanting to control (insert something here). This falls a bit into the above item, but takes on a whole light when you consider most people don’t have a good idea of what is in their sphere of control and what isn’t. Wanting to control how a party turns out requires that we control everyone who attends. This does not add to happiness, and like the above, is impossible. Better: realize you cannot control most things.
  3. Bad moods. Sometimes we wake up with them, sometimes circumstances conspire to push us in that direction. Bad moods are bad attitudes, and other people (particularly children) will pick up on them and things will get grumpy and stressful all around. Better: we can control our moods. Learn techniques to get you out of the grumpies.
  4. Chain reactions. Humans are like sponges, we pick up on the emotions around us. If we are around someone with a really bad attitude, chances are we are going to pick it up and the above three things will happen. Better solution: avoid negative people where possible, learn to counteract negativity inside you.

Next week we’ll tackle a big cause of daily stress: procrastination
