The Secret to Getting Started Decluttering

Overwhelming Tasks

Some things in life, when viewed as a whole, are overwhelming. Looking at a lifetime of clutter with the knowledge it must be cleared out can lead us to give up before we have even started. For after all, who can see the end when the beginning looks too hard?

Perception Versus Reality

Each overwhelming task is made up of lots of smaller tasks. The trick is to train ourselves to see the small tasks, and tune out the whole. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

When we can see the little, manageable tasks, we have a much better shot at getting started and completing the whole. For if you never start, you will never end.

Getting Started

Decluttering can be approached the same way. Instead of telling yourself you must declutter the house, or a whole room or a closet, pick something smaller. For example, if the task in front of you is to declutter your bedroom, start with something small. Start will decluttering the top of your bed, or a shelf, or a drawer.

Keeping From Being Overwhelmed

If you still are feeling panicked because you see how much there is to do, take the bit you are decluttering somewhere else. Take the drawer to the kitchen table, or out on the front porch — wherever there is no clutter to distract you. When you are done with that one piece, put the finished drawer back, and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

Approaching decluttering one pile at a time can make the overwhelming job much more doable.
