Keys, Re-examined

Last month I wrote about simplifying my keyring. I had a reason to look at it again over the past few weeks and came up with some adjustments.

Standard Keys

I still only have the house key and the car keys on the keyring. The recent purchase of a hybrid car removed my standard car key and added a locking/unlocking box that serves as the “key” for the new car. I had thought about taking my husband’s car key and lock/unlock device off the ring, since I rarely drive that car. I had also thought about removing the lanyard, since I only need to have the keys on my person in order to start my car, and it is easier to keep my keys in my purse without the lanyard..

In Face of Emergency

On January 5, my husband had a bad accident. As the ambulance pulled away, one of my neighbors offered to drive me to the hospital, or to drive me in my car, with someone following. Another neighbor had taken charge of my young daughter and was looking for the dog we thought had escaped during the trauma. I was able to toss the one neighbor my lanyard with the keys, and give the other neighbor a spare set of keys we had on hand. Now, after the shock is over, I am looking at my keys again.

What do I need?

What do I need to carry with me? I have decided that I need to carry my house key, my car “key” and the key to my husband’s car. Not the locking device, though. And I need to keep it on the lanyard because it increases the visibility of my keys and makes them very easy to find.

What do I need to have handy

I also need to have a set of house keys handy and ready to go. All of our locks are keyed to the same key, but if that were not the case, I would need to have a complete set ready to hand to someone should the need arise.
