Simplifying Dinner: Soup and Bread

Photo by svacherI love easy dinners. But fast food and prepared dinners are short on nutrition and high in fat and sugar. So what’s a working woman to do?

Automatic Food

While I have about a 50% success rate with crock pot dinners (in other words, 50% are something I would never make again), I love the idea of putting stuff in and having dinner ready at the end of the day. This kind of automatic dinner makes me feel like I’ve actually got time to relax after work.

Double Header: Soup and Bread

One thing that has always worked for me is crock pot soup. I have never had a soup recipe fail. No matter how long it ends up cooking, it never burns, dries out or becomes otherwise inedible. So we eat soup. And what is the natural companion of soup? Bread. So for a little time in the morning I come home to a luscious dinner and the smell of fresh-baked bread. What could be easier?

What I Like

Crock Cookbooks

I have a few favorite crock cookbooks. The first, along with really good soup recipes, also has a chicken marsala recipe that is heavenly. It is The Everyday Low-Carb Slow Cooker Cookbook: Over 120 Delicious Low-Carb Recipes That Cook Themselves (aff) The Dude Ranch soup is particularly good.

The standard of crock cooking, Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook: Feasting with Your Slow Cooker (aff), has some great recipes in it. However, there are a lot of recipes and no pictures in this one.

Bread Machine Cookbooks

My bread machines have all come with cookbooks. Most of the breads have been wonderful.

A neighbor introduced me to this series of cookbooks, and they were a wonderful expansion of my recipes. The Bread Machine Cookbook (aff) has many variations on wonderful Old World breads, and some great ones. We love the Grape Nuts bread.
