Simplifying Dinner: Four Ways to Simplify Cleanup

One of the worst chores of preparing dinner is doing the cleanup. There are ways you can make it easier on yourself, though:

Have A Place To Put Dirty Dishes

This seems like a no-brainer…but you would be surprised how many people try to clean their kitchens with a sinkful or dishwasher-full of clean dishes. Before you start to cook, put the clean dishes away.

Wash As You Prepare

Before you start cooking, fill your sink up with hot, soapy water. As you cook, put dirty dishes and utensils in there, give them a quick swish and into the dishwasher (if you don’t have a dishwasher put them in a dishpan…but get them out of your way).

Scrape the Dishes After Dinner

Take a rubber spatula and scrape the dishes after dinner. It does a better job than rinsing, and food isn’t as likely to cling to the dishes.

Always Clean Up Right After A Meal

Don’t wait. Even if coming into a filthy kitchen first thing in the morning wasn’t bad enough, dishes left until the next day are going to have food hardened on them — making the job of cleanup even harder. Even if you have to soak something before washing it, make sure you clean it up. Leaving it overnight is asking for hardened food or worse…there is nothing like having to clean up a mess after a pet tried to drink out of the soaking dishes!
