Self Watering Garden

Photo by Field Outdoor SpacesGardening is not about sticking seeds and plants in the ground and coming back in a few weeks to harvest. Believe me, I’ve tried this method. Part of a successful garden is providing the plants with consistent water. You can try and remember to water regularly, but I find that I do even better with a self-watering garden.

The Self-Watering Garden

The principle behind a self-watering garden is that you provide a large-ish quantity of water, and the plant takes it as it needs. There are two forms that this type of gardening takes: containers and water spikes.

Containers

The last few years have seen an explosion of self-watering containers on the market. I own five right now: two planters (containing blueberries), a tomato garden, and two hanging baskets. You can find many of these containers at Gardener’s Supply Company..

It is also possible to make your own self-watering containers. One method was shown in the April issue of Mother Earth News. Instructables has a good article on EarthBoxes, and also one for growing herbs.

Water Spikes

Water spikes are devices that deliver a slow drip of water to plant roots. I have had success with the Gardener’s Supply version, but the homemade system at YouGrowGirl looks like it would work for much less money.
