Random Simplicity: Simplify Your Pets

From Simplify Your Life: 100 Ways to Slow Down and Enjoy the Things That Really Matter (aff) by Elaine St. James

“Pets won’t simplify your life, but there are things you can do to make pet ownership easier.”. “Pets won’t simplify your life, but there are things you can do to make pet ownership easier.”. We have three fur-babies (2 cats, one dog) in our house, and they bring us immense joy. Our lives are more complicated because of them, but what they give us back is 10 times the effort we put into their upkeep.

For example, my oldest cat knows when I am not feeling well. A few weeks ago I had horrible intestinal cramps. When I laid down on the bed, he came and laid next to me. He did not leave my side until the next morning, and he would reach out and touch my face with a paw from time to time. Our dog also gives back, although I will admit, more to my spouse than myself. But without her, I wouldn’t walk as often as I do.

The tips in the book are straightforward enough: stick with short-haired pets and groom them daily; keep pets indoors; rid the house of fleas. I have a few more tips to add for simplifying life with pets:

  1. Put wipe-able placemats under their feeding stations. This makes cleanup much quicker.
  2. Keep leashes and collars accessible. Our cats wear their collars all the time, in case they get out. The dog wears hers, and the leash is kept near the front door. We never have to search for these items.
  3. Keep records up to date, and in one place. Our pet records live in a folder. The folder goes with me to the vet, and I never have to figure out where the shot records are.
  4. Clean as you go. Cleaning up the yard every time the dog goes is much easier than trying to remember where all the “landmines” are at the end of the week.
  5. Prevent problems. Flea/tick and heart worm medication is available. Both are well worth the cost.
