Random Simplicity: Simplify Your Eating Habits

In Simplify Your Life: 100 Ways to Slow Down and Enjoy the Things That Really Matter (aff), tip #57 recommends “Simplify Your Eating Habits.” I will confess, the first time I read this I thought “how boring! Eating the same meals every day!” I have come to apply this tip to my own life, though, in a much more moderate way.

The easiest way to simplify your eating is to plan what you are going to eat each week (or in our case, each fortnight). You can either designate days as certain types of food (Monday pasta, Tuesday soup/salad, etc), or do a pre-packaged menu plan, such as those found at SavingDinner.com, or a mixture of both. Once you have a plan, you will no longer be staring into the refrigerator at dinner time wondering what to fix.

As an example, here is what we do: I have my shopper come every two weeks. I try to schedule meals so that I cook on weekends, and have either super-easy recipes, crock pot meals or leftovers for the week. I do a combination of Menu Mailers from SavingDinner.com, which provides me with 6 recipes (12 meals) and our Friday night special. On Fridays we will either do pizza or something on the grill.

Once I decide what the meals will be, I fill out the side dishes. The Menu Mailer does it for me, but since my taste does not necessarily run to what is suggested, I may substitute. Once that is done, I make my shopping list. The Menu Mailer comes with a shopping list attached, and I scratch out what we don’t need, add items for our Friday meals, and then add on lunches and breakfasts. All done within 20 minutes, and I now have a plan for the next 14 days.
