News and Overload

I recently realized that I am always surrounded by the news. It’s on my music station, coming across my email, decorating my web browser. I don’t watch much television, but when I do, I am aware of the “news breaks” that come across as a variation to the commercials. The sad thing is that most of what passes for news these days is not new, nor is it worthy for me to contemplate.

For example, the recent death of a starlet decorated the headlines for days with speculation and custody issues. Is this something I should care about? Other than a sense of pity for a woman I consider sadly troubled, no. This situation, and countless others that permeate every headline and outlet, smacks of voyeurism to me.

I sometimes have to wonder how much this tendency contributes to a personal sense of overload. Can we truly be at peace with ourselves if we are constantly looking at other people’s situations and tragedies? Can watching others when they are at their worst truly help us become our best selves?

Somehow I don’t think so.
