Natural Multitasking: Being in the Moment

Not too long ago I posted articles on the negative impact of multitasking. Not long after that, I ran across an article from Robert Fulghum on a different take on multitasking. It occurred to me that we are not ever truly focused on one thing. Even at our most concentrated, our brains are picking up, via our senses, data about the world around us.

It also occurred to me, that if we focus on the input coming to us, this is another form of being present in the moment. Being present is a good way to center yourself and bring some semblance of inner peace.

For example, I was out in the garden a few nights ago. Rather than plugging myself into my MP3 or thinking about the book I will be writing in November, I concentrated on being outside. I became aware that the birds were singing, the squirrels were busy hiding nuts in my flower beds, and a late bee was hovering over the butterfly bush.

I would suggest that you read Robert Fulghum’s article. It’s really a different way of looking at using natural multitasking.
