How To Change Who You Are

I had a most interesting piece of text jump out at me recently. In the article Trimming the attention sails, the first line was simply:

You are what you pay attention to.

The article itself held some interest for me, as I had done the media fast and learned quite a bit about myself and what I pay attention to. But I kept coming back to the quote.

I reached the conclusion upon reflecting on the quote that it was very true. I already know that if we are focused on negative things, more negative things seem to happen. If we focus on one little incident, our attention will blow it up into massive proportions. When we are irritated, more things arise to irritate us further. Call it the Law of Attraction or whatever you wish.

So is it true at another level? What about those days when I focus on the minutiae of the housework? Well, the housework expands to fill all day. When I am focused on creative projects, my creativity expands.

So it must be in there somehow that if we want to change ourselves, we must change our focus. A recent book I read was about building our strengths, rather than working on our weaknesses. If we focus on what we do well, it follows we will be much more successful than if we do things we are weak at.

So what can we learn from this to simplify our lives? If we want simplicity, we must focus on simplicity and not let outside pressures drive us to clutter our lives. If we want inner peace we must focus on it and work at it. It will not show up by accident.

So if you want to change who you are, change your focus. You are what you pay attention to.
