Guilt As A Motivator
I ran across an article earlier this year about our “carbon crimes”. Since greening my life is a direct offshoot of simplifying my life, the article caught my attention for its primary focus: green lifestyle. But the part that stuck with me over the past few months is the passages on guilt:
We are living in an age of guilt, we are constantly being made to feel bad for our lifestyle and actions, as important as this is guilt is not a advisable starting point for any change. Don’t feel guilty, feel as if you are making a difference, feel good about the steps you are taking not bad about the life you used to live.
This will be the generation that will have to make a difference lets do that with a positive mental attitude, rather than a negative one.(sic)
Whenever we are doing anything in our lives, we need to make sure that it is coming from a positive place; that we are trying to make our future lives better rather than atoning for past mistakes. This applies to simplifying and inner peace, too; we must do it for the future good it will do us rather than as a way to make up for a too-busy past or stressed out past.
Remember, no one loves a martyr. Leave the guilt behind at the door, and approach the future with positivity!
