Five Ways To Simplify Gardening

It is amazing to me that I could even attempt to give gardening advice, since I am terrible at it. But there are some things I can pass on that can make growing things much easier.

#1 If You Are Using Pots, Water Them

I love potted plants. Unfortunately, I often leave them to fend for themselves. Investing in self-watering plants, or gadgets that will help water the plants really makes a difference. There are also additives you can put in the soil to help it retain water better. Water is essential, and potted plants lose water faster than their in-ground counterparts.

#2 Use Native Plants

Non-native plants are going to require a lot of maintenance to make them grow. Growing outdoor cacti on the frozen tundra is going to complicate your gardening life. Stick with native plants. Many gardening stores will help you select them.

#3 Don’t Attempt Too Much

Do not be seduced by the thought of lush English gardens or huge vegetable gardens ready to feed the masses if you have never gardened. Gardening takes lots of constant work. Build on the past, add things each year.

#4 Prevent Weeds

Whether it is mulch, landscaping fabric, or keeping everything in pots, keeping the weeds away is essential to making plants grow. Unchecked weeds will choke out your good plants.

#5 Keep The Critters At Bay

A single hungry rabbit can devour a huge garden overnight. Birds can empty a fruit plant 20 minutes before you decide to pick the ripe berries. Use netting and soft fences as physical barriers. You can also get waxy sprays with hot pepper in them to make certain plants unpalatable. (Ask the rabbits in my yard. They all got jalapeno breath after attempting to eat my lilies.)
