First Steps In Simplicity: How To Determine What Is Important

One of the things to do when you simplify is to figure out what is important, and get rid of the rest. It applies to jobs, people, activities and possessions. But the hard part is figuring out what is important to begin with.

The web isn’t much help. The top two articles returned on my search came to a “God wants xxx” and an article from a conspiracy theorist.

Some of us have religious traditions to fall back on to tell us what is important. These are generally precepts on how to live your life, not what to have in them.

So where do we start looking?

I think it may be an ongoing search, but when I sat down to seriously think about this question, I started thinking about all the times I had heard people say that when they got to the end of their lives, they had regrets. So why not imagine the end, and figure out what fits in. It sounds trite, but what would you do/have if you had one week to live? How about a month? It needs to be examined from the perspective of people, activities and things.

This is an intensely personal search, so I will leave it to each of you to seek your own answers.
