Easiest Green Living Tip = Simple Living Tip
Approaching life with the goal of being green can often complicate rather than simplify. However, approaching it from living simply will generally equate to less impact on the earth. Less consumption (simplicity) leads to less waste (green).
In a recent article, No Impact Man, whose goal is to live a lifestyle that does not impact the earth, talks about how many green living tips include carrying around reusable containers to use at restaurants. He has another take on it. “Humping around cups and bowls and other accouterments in order to quiet the need for immediate gratification got to be unbearably inconvenient.”.”Humping around cups and bowls and other accouterments in order to quiet the need for immediate gratification got to be unbearably inconvenient.” So if he doesn’t have time to sit and drink from the restaurant’s reusable cup, he doesn’t have it. “I finally learned to either do without or wait until later.”
Going along these lines, I think of the immediate gratification angle. So much of our impact on the earth stems from this behavior. It also complicates our lives, leading to purchases we don’t really need. Here are the simple lifestyle benefits of such a change:
- Lower consumption of food = fewer calories. Most of us eat too much. Obesity is an epidemic in the U.S.
- Lower use of disposable cups, plates, etc = less garbage to dispose of
- Eating at restaurants with non-disposable dishes = more real food, better nutrition
- Not eating out = saving money
- Not patronizing fast food restaurants = less fast food restaurants, if enough of us do it.
I gave up eating at fast food restaurants about six months ago due to health concerns, and the realization I really felt ill after eating greasy carb-laden food. Now I have even more reason to slow down and skip the fast pace.
