Clutter 101: What is Clutter?
What Is Clutter?

My definition of clutter is something that you don’t use or respect. By respect, I mean that you must respect it enough to care for it properly.
Why Should I Care About Clutter?
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has clutter somewhere. Clutter is insidious and creeps into our lives and homes without conscious thought. It becomes a problem when it starts holding you back from what you want in life.
Clutter doesn’t have to fill every room in your home for it to be a problem. Even overfull bookshelves or sock drawers can cause tension in daily life; why have stress in your life if you can avoid it?
Is There A List of Clutter Items?
For each person, clutter will look different. I hear all the time that breadmakers need to be given away because they are clutter. But I use mine at least twice a week. I use it regularly, therefore it is not clutter. My mother’s collection of thimbles is clutter to me. But she displays them well and enjoys them, so they are not clutter to her.
Levels of Clutter
There are levels of clutter in homes. There is surface clutter, usually consisting of paper and “collectibles” or stuff that is not put away. Inside closets and drawers we find another set of clutter. Then there is the hidden clutter — things we have become so used to seeing that we no longer register its existence.
