5 Things You Might Not Know About Simplicity

There are a lot of things to be considered when talking about simplifying your life. Over at DIY Planner, Passionate_Pilgrim has posted an article called Excellence Through Simplicity, there are some good points about the process of simplicity that should be considered by everyone in today’s modern lifestyle.

Simplicity Is Process

Simplicity is a process, not a goal. There are two aspects to this thinking: first, it is about the journey. Second, the journey itself and where you end up will be different for different people. What is simple for one person will end up being complicating for another.

Simplicity Is About Added Value

Simplicity is about added value. If something or someone is not adding value to your life, it is a good candidate for removal.

This is easiest understood in a manufacturing scenario: if you have a machine that is making widgets, and you are adding knob Q onto the widget, but it does nothing toward what the widget is supposed to do, why would you waste the material and labor to add it to the widget? It is not adding value to the widget, and should be removed.

This is harder to apply to life, particularly when we are talking about stuff or people that we have an emotional investment in, but we need to consider what is adding value to our lives. Life is short. Don’t waste it.

Simplicity Is About Decluttering

Most of the stuff we have around us is not necessary to survival. The article talks about how his son had a garage sale, and it sounds like everything in the garage was sold. The discovery? Nothing has been missed.

Most of the women’s magazines carry articles on organizing. The truth is, you can’t organize clutter. We have organization problems because we have too much stuff.

Simplicity Is About Figuring Out What You Want

Simplifying is about deciding what you want out of life. These are individual paths. Perhaps one person may decide that the thing they want most is to stop working; he would have to make the changes in lifestyle necessary to accommodate that. The next person may decide that they most want to travel every summer; she would have to make different changes to make that goal a reality.

Simplicity is not for simplicity sake; you will have some driving force behind it.

Simplicity Is Leading A Deliberate Life

In the end, simplicity is about living a deliberate life. All this means is that you are conscious of what you are doing, and if your actions are in line with your life’s goals. When we decide what we want out of life, we are deciding to live our lives with a goal.

The ironic thing is that getting to a simple state is not simple. It takes time, thought, and deliberate action.
